| LAPIN KANSA: Volleyball emotions 14 Mar 2012 | BACK TO BLOG |
I've said before in this blog that volleyball is by far the most difficult sport to photograph. I still think so, but I've learned that a sport is never just hitting or kicking a ball. Hitting the ball or shooting a puck is a physical task which a human being is doing. What is really interesting and able to tell a story is how the person is doing the task. The aftermath of succeeding or failing is the pretty much the only interesting part in sports. Of course pure skill and beauty in performing is great, but it is far from the emotion of struggling to win or playing a phenomenal night.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Earlier my struggle with volleyball came from trying to take pictures of visually dead parts of the game. How many great images have you seen off a guy slamming a ball over the net? Not too many I presume. Even if you hang two cameras from the ceiling, it's just a guy slamming a ball. Slamming a ball in a picture tells a story of slamming a ball. A story about slamming a ball is a story nobody would read. A story about winning or losing is a story of emotion. A professional game is never decided on which team has the better players, it is decided on who wants to win more and who hates losing more. Right now that is where I go with volleyball pictures. After going to Team Lakkapää games to shoot during the winter, I've come to know some player charasteristics. I know who play with their hearts on their sleeves and when the game is being decided I know who to look for emotion. I know who individuals can carry the team to victory and who have been struggling with their game lately. All of this is more important than being able to focus and press a button continuously to take 10 frames per second. But with volleyball, 10 frames per second helps a lot! |
