New photoset at STRAP! 27 Mar 2007 Posted by Jussi.

Woohaa. After mad hours of work and planning, the fashion show documentary story is finally at strap-photos.com for all of you to see and dislike before continuing to browse pictures about birds and squirrels. I documented the fashion show at the university of Lapland, a behind the scenes look to all of the stuff these people do to get the show running. This 18 picture story shows the preparation and the show itself, I hope you like it. The show happened on a worst day for me, I had to be in 3 different places, I didn't really want to leave the other places but I was committed to doing this good, I hope it shows.

Thank you to all of the designers, models and everyone involved and letting me do my silly stuff and not questioning why I wanted to do something the way I wanted to do it. Enough of the blabber, I added some captions to let you guys know what's in the picture because some of the stuff was pretty new to me too. Thanks! Check out the story HERE!
This is the reason I haven't been blogging new stuff for you guys, plus that exhibition we got running. Some pics from there coming tommorrow or something! If you're in Rovaniemi area, go check it out!
Suomeksi: STRAP godlike infamy sivuilla on siis uusi setti nähtävillä. Yliopiston vaatetuspuolen suunnittelijoiden järjestämä muotinäytös dokumentaarisessa muodossa, valmistelusta itse h-hetkeen. Käy ihmeessa tsekkaamassa mihin allekirjoittanut kulutti paljon ajatusta ja aikaa.
Kaikenlaista luomisen tuskaa tuli koettu etenkin iltanäytöksessä, jossa valaistus oli täysin karmea, eikä luonnon valo riittänyt alkuunkaan yhtään mihinkään, mutta sai sieltäkin lopulliseen settiin muistaakseni kaksi kuvaa. Nooh kuitenkin, pahoittelut kiireestä johtuneesta hiljaisuudesta blogin suhteen. Bong. Tsekkaa setti tästä!

Daaaeeuum I got shitloads of shit (of course) to do. Got that exhibition to finish and open with Petri, the fashion show is happening tomorrow, Kallinkangas snowboard competition is also tomorrow, and I should be doing some website stuff too, plus I'm working on a project for the university. Hotdaaaaaaaaeeuuum and I should be studying too.. Tommorrow is the culmination of bullshit and cool stuff. It's all cool but current return of the flue and extremely hectic schedule ain't helping. When all that stuff is over I'm just gonna put on a Willis flick and pop a beer.. and snort some of that Vick's nosespray.

Suomeksi: Huominen on kiireen ja edestakaisin rullaamisen multihuipentuma. Eka hirveää kyytiä Keminmaahan jokavuotisiin Kallin snoukkailukilpailuihin, sieltä tuhatta ja sataa takaisin Rovaniemelle dokumentoimaan muotinäytösprojektin varsinainen näytös. Tähän lisätään maanantaina aukeava Strap-näyttely, muut duunit ja paluun tehnyt paskaflunssa. Hrrr.
Näytöksen kuvaamisesta tulee haastava juttu, kun tila jossa se pidetään ei ole kovinkaan kaunis ja todella kolkko paikka kuvata. Ongelmana on myös voimakkaan keinovalon ja kattoikkunoista tulvivan luonnonvalon yhdistelmä, mutta eiköhän sieltä hyviä juttuja tartu mukaan jahka saa yleisönkin näytökseen paikan päälle tuomaan tunnelmaa. Pitää tempoa oikein puku päälle että ainakin näyttäisi ammattimaiselta.
Illalla kiire puolittuu ja voi korkata oluen ja katsoa tyhjyyteen, mmmm toivottakaa onnea. Ja terveisiä Tuomolle.

I don't have anything to bitch about on my mind today, so I'll just post an image from last fall, while I wait for my pizza to be ready in the oven. Hah.
I'm anxiously waiting to get some packages from ebay.. Damn it's wrecking to wait for stuff to come. I was joking with one of my teachers yesterday about photographers and shop-a-holismn camera's make you go through. The second you get a little extra money, you jump on the ebay wagon and go crazy. Buying stuff that you 'need'. Hah.

Today we have a snowboarding picture from the scan archive. In snowboarding pictures there are few common things that have to be shown, and of course these are known for all people who snowboard and have experience watching these images. All the rest should not even ask what these are.. for the regular-joe these is just what it is, all you can see is what you got, regular-joe doesn't give a damn if you can't see how big is the jump to this rail, for example. I've pretty much grown sick of the regular restrictions caused by snowboarding media and trick oriented photography going around within the sport.
But when a person who has no experience in this sport, or shooting it takes images, they tend to look like shit. Which means you sort of have to keep your wild creativeness inside certain guidelines to be able to call it snowboarding photography, and do it in a way riders can appreciate your work.

Suomeksi: Olen tainnut aiemminkin kirjoittaa lumilautailukuvissa olevista tietyistä pakotteista, asioita jotka pitää tulla kuvasta selville, jotta itse lajin harrastajat voivat saada kuvasta kaiken irti. Tämä on ilkeästi ristiriidassa valokuvan vapauden ja luovuuden kanssa, toki se nostattaa haastetta miten kykenet esittämään tietyt asiat hienosti, mutta myös rajoittaa koska voit joutua orjallisesti noudattamaan niitä.
Vastakohta tästä nähdään kun kuvaaja jonka ainoa kontakti lajiin on paikallislehden päin helvettiä kuvatutlautailukuvat ja niistä opittu kuvantekemisen malli, tuloksena on lajin harrastajien kannalta todella hirveitä ilmestyksiä, usein hyvin epäimartelevia asentoja ja ajoituksia. Yleensä nähdään vain laskija ja taivasta, ei mitään informaatiota joka määrittäisi paikan ja tunnelman. Ehkä pitäisi löytää jokin vapauden ja pakoitteen kultainen keskiväylä, jossa mielenkiinto pysyisi ja silti olisi haastetta..

Yesterday we we're joking (atleast I was, I don't know if Petri was..) that my pictures suck because I don't use fill-flash. Super fun joke-joke-ho-ho but still it got me thinking. Isn't fill-flash supposed to be used in situations where you want to open shadows in let's say daylight conditions. I know that properly used it is a cool feature but doesn't this lead to loss of reality and emotion in the pictures? I see it is a very popular method in newspaper photography and there it sometimes does work but it stil leaves me thinking are these images better or worse with the flash, or does it matter? How much does it alter the mood and atmosphere in the images? My dislike for flashes propably are due to the fact that I can't use them for shit and they always seem to just mess up my work with too much hassle. Today's picture is yet another photo of Marjukka, taken in Savonlinna straight against the sun in the horizon. No fill.

Suomeksi: Huumorin kuninkaina eilen vitsailimme siitä että näyttelykuvamme ovat epäonnistuneita, koska niissä ei ole käytetty täytesalamaa. Tiedän kyllä että oikein taitavasti käytettynä ja oikeanlaisissa kuvissa se on hienon näköinen ominaisuus. Sanomalehdissä se on todella suosittu tapa valaista kuvat ja usein toimivakin, mutta voisivatko nekin kuvat olla parempia tunnelmaltaan ja fiilikseltään ilman tuota salamaa? Onhan se toki hienon näköistä kun on kunnolla valaistu pärstä jaffakelitaivasta vasten, mutta onko se parempi kuin luonnollinen valo, vai onko sillä oikeasti edes väliä?
Itse en salamoista välitä lautailukuvausta lukuunottamatta, johtuen luultavasti siitä etten noita jumalattomia vehkeitä oikein osaa käyttää ja hermostun ennenkuin koskaan ehdin oppia. Yleensä ne vaan sotkevat pakkani sekoilullaan ja eivät kuitenkaan näytä niin hyvältä kuin oikea valo. Toisaalta kyllähän ne täysin keinotekoisiin kuviin sopivat kun luodaan kokonainen valaisu ja tunnelma nollasta lähtien. Hrrr.
Päivän kuva on yllättäen kuva Marjukasta viime kesältä, Savonlinnan reissulta. Vastavaloon ilman filliä.

This was my proposal for Kalli snowboarders for their new logo, I heard I came second in the vote, whoohaa! Hard to beat those chinese-rap-ass-font logos. After this huge disappointment last night I felt like it was all over for me. Huh just kidding, not. But hey if you need a logo we can always just swap the texts. Hah!
Today me and Petri went to do some work with our photos for the Strap exhibition coming up. We got half of the pictures finished and daaaaeeuuum they look banging! Seriously I think they'll sell those on ebay for 500000$ in 25 years, so buy them now!
Suomeksi: Kuvan logo oli ehdotukseni Kalli snowboard duudsien uudeksi logoksi, palkintona olisi lienee ollut kiinalaista räppiä vinyylillä tai huppari johon logo on painettu. No en voittanut ja tämäkös minua on masentanut ja vienyt spiraalinomaisesti alaspäin synkkiin tunnelmiin. Pitänee käydä kiinalainen räptypografiakurssi jossain kansalaisopistossa.
Strap näyttely edistyy hiljalleen. Tänään kävimme Petrin kanssa pohjustamassa puolet kuvista, ja alkaa näyttää TODELLA hyvältä. Suosittelen että ostatte nyt omanne talteen, koska vuosien kuluttua nuo menevät ebayssä aika törkeillä summilla.

Just got my very first medium format camera, the Kiev-60 (with a 45mm lens) in the mail. This heavy ass chunk of nuclear waste metal feels, looks and even smells like russian camera should. I can smell the russian potato eating worker's sweat on it. Greeeat. Can't wait to test it and get few more lenses to play with. Thanks to Antti for selling me this set for a reasonable price. And oh yeah, the flu is about over now, maybe tomorrow I'm in full effect.
Also I went to see the fashion show early rehersals today and got about 9 pulitzer winning images ready in my head I want to shoot, we'll see how that goes. Bong.
Suomeksi: Sain tänään venakko Kiev-60 kameran postissa. Painaa kuin synti ja tuntuu, näyttää ja etenkin haisee umpivenakolle, minulla ei ole mitään venäläisiä vastaan mutta veikkaisin Pietarin kodittomien viemärivenäläisten haisevan juuri tälle. Pakko hommata kuiluetsin ja pari linssiä lisää että pääsee oikein kunnolla kuvaamaan. Kiitoksia Antille reiluista kaupoista. Mmmmm. Flunssa on jo miltei kukistettu ahkeralla vitamiinien douppaamisella, näin sivuhuomiona.
Kävin myös tsekkaamassa tulevan muotinäytöksen harjoituksia ja sain 9 pulitzer tason kuvaideaa jotka pitää yrittää toteuttaa, saapas nähdä.

I seem to have catched a mean case of the flu that's going around. Couldn't really sleep last night, just freaking out. You know when you have a fever you can't really sleep and can even hallucinate. I had some shitty hallucinations looping all night, one was that I had a brand new iMac computer and that thing just couldn't work, all I had was the grey screen. This 'dream' looped for about 3-4 hours. Another one was some weird stuff too, in that dream or hallucination, I had someone telling me "you can't sleep like that, that's not a good position", again this looped for a few hours I think. So I somehow couldn't find a comfortable position to sleep and ended up rolling around. I hate when that happens, I hate getting sick in general. I rarely get really sick and it always goes by in a few days. But today I had to throw up, shake and all that yummy stuff. Gotta hope it's better tomorrow, if I have the guts to go to sleep again..

In search of cure I'm all out of berryjuice, milk (you know for hot chocolate), I still have drugs but I don't think they help that much, better let the fever kill the illness. I don't have any booze, which no doubt would help a lot, if nothing else but to get my mood up. Today's picture is a photo of a long john bottle of booze, nothing that big.
Suomeksi: Täälläpäin kiertävä flunssaepidemiahommahomma on saanut allekirjoittaneenkin kouriinsa. Nukkumisesta ei tule mitään kun älyttömyydessään hassut hallusinaatiot pilaavat vähänkin houreunen. Ei naurattanut yöllä katsella alitajuntaluuppeja jostain rikkinäisistä tietokoneista jotka sammuvat aina kun käynnistän ne, tai jostain sällistä joka selittää etten voi nukkua tuossa asennossa. Herkkua. Olen kuluttanut äidin herkulliset mustaherukkamehut ja maitoa ei ole kaakaohommiin, lääkkeitä olisi, mutta eihän ne mitään auta. Katsotaan jos huomenna kykenisi kouluun taas, tämä päivä meni houreessa vaikka sainkin yhden nettisivujutun väännettyä ahdistuksen rajamailla. Toki jotta huominen tulisi pitää uskaltautua nukkumaan tänäänkin. Hrrr. Kyllä Long John drinksu kelpais!

I don't have a small, compact camera to carry around everywhere. At least all my smaller cameras suck or just don't let me do all the things I want to. I decided to get my hands on a russian Leica style rangefinder, FED camera. I've read that models FED-4 and FED-5 have a meter built in so those are my choices. I doubt they will blow my mind but atleast they don't cost much and I don't have to care about what happens to them. It's such a drag to carry a digital body or heavy SLR around, you'd need a bag and I'm not a bag kind of a dude. We'll have to see if someone in Finland can sell me one or if I have to get mine on ebay.

This kind of photographs are what this FED would be for. Just some quick shots about whatever happens to pop up. I think this is from mcdonalds drive-in sometime last month or even earlier, my negatives always end up laying around for a while. I hope the girl don't mind me taking a photograph.
Suomeksi: Tarvitsen pienikokoisen kameran, joka olisi suunnilleen aina mukana koulussa, ulkona tai missä vain satun pyörimäänkään. Kaikki nykyiset romut ovat joko surkeita tai rajoittuneita, joten niillä ei tee oikein mitään. Ajattelin kokeilla venäläistä FED rangefinderiä, tuskinpa sekään mikään uskomaton on, mutta ajaa varmaan asiansa tuollaisessa näppäilyssä. Noiden pitäisi olla edullisia, joten ei tarvitse olla kovin paineissaan kolhuista ja naarmuista. Digin ja muiden isompien SLR vehkeiden kanssa on aina vähän epävarmaa ja varovaista, jonka lisäksi ne vaativat yleensä laukun, jota en kyllä jaksa roudata.
Pitää katsoa jos sais Suomen maasta FED-4 tai FED-5 mallin halvalla, jos ei niin ebay here I come. Päivän kuva on Mcdonaldsin autokaistan tytöstä, juuri tällaisia kuvia varten tämä rangefinder kamera tulisi hankittua. Saapas nähdä.

Miikka from flatlight films had been filming for a big snowboarding movie with Tuomas Poikela, called Good times. The movie came out a while ago with Onboard magazine, which is the biggest, most beautiful snowboarding magazine in europe. I was photographing the intro shoot for the movie and had 2 pictures in the magazine! Extremely happy to get pictures to one of my favorite magazines, but something felt a bit goofy about how they came out. I was asked for RAW files to maximize the quality in the final print. So I sent the RAW's along with my own finished JPG's. As these images were shot in extremely shitty light conditions with crappy low aperture lenses and bad sensor digital camera I went with B/W because it suited the mood perfectly. I had always thought about these images as in black and white images, so I was a bit surprised to find them published in color, with very little or no finishing. These look literally out of the camera, not even sharpening.

I know dudes back at Onboard thought it propably suits the story better with color, I don't argue with that but look at the difference in style, feel and class in the original version. If I had only sent the images in JPG, they might have not used them at all..

Hell it was cool to see a whole spread from my own photo in such a big magazine and get paid too. Thanks for Miikka and Tuomas for having me come and shoot.
Suomeksi: Miikka toi juuri minulle ranskankielisen (framboise jushibhavo la la la bukee) kopion Onboardista, jossa on juttu Good Times snoukkailuleffasta. Olin kuvaamassa kun pojat kuvasivat introa elokuvaansa ja lopulta sain pari kuvaa tuohon Onboardiin. Lehteä selaillessa ihmettelin kun kuvat eivät yhtään näytä niiltä versioilta jollaisina ne itse olen viimeistellyt aikoinaan. Lehdessä oli päätetty käyttää suoraa RAW tiedosta, ilman mitään korjailua. Omasta mielestäni nuo kuvat lehdessä näyttävät ihan helvetin rumilta, mutta varmasti ratkaisulle on perusteet. Ihmeellistä kun on itse tottunut katsomaan joitain kuvia ja sitten näkeekin ne täysin erilaisena jossain. Ylhäällä on molemmat versiot, mielenkiintoista verrata fiilistä ja meininkiä kuvien välillä. Raw kuva lehdessä on ruman värinen, skarppaamaton ja lattea. Hieman ärsyttää jopa, hah, tosin itsehän sen kuvasin. Onneksi voin syyttää valoa ja välineitä ja Venäjää!

Ehkäpä ensi kerralla lähetän pelkän oman versioni, vaikka se vaarantaisikin julkaisun. Äärimmäisen siisti homma kuitenkin saada arvostamaansa lehteen kuvia. Kannattaa myös tsekata leffa, jos suomalainen snoukkailupelleily kiinnostaa!

All praise and applause, I'm back from my skiing vacation at north korea. Blog updates are back in action and the promised pictures of pretty girls are here. The idea behind the fashion show is supposed to be 'round the clock', categories are morning, rush hour and shadow. The press release pictures are wrapped around these themes and pieces of clothing. I thought the idea was to raise awareness about the show and get people excited about what they're going to see. Of course the designers would want to show their creations as a whole, but mostly that would just flatten the image and hide the intriquing details. We were photographing as a team of two so I think we got best of both worlds and everyone should be happy, except for me who is never satisfied with anything.

This is the 'morning' image, or one of the alternatives. Working with these ideas with Marjukka (the other photographer) was a good thing to do because I think we both got to shoot the images we wanted, or pieces of them. Our model for all of the female images (and the male ones we do not talk about!) was one of the designers, Johanna. She was great and has a interesting face with a lot of expressions that don't even look stupid all the time (like the face of yours truly).

For the rushhour image I wanted to have a picture of this classy dress caught in the rush of people, I wanted to have bright colored wall and all that but these goddamn corridors are so small that I couldn't really create the composition I wanted. I wanted to shoot straight from the side, but just couldn't do it, even with a extreme wide lens, because I hate it when wide lens distortion steals the composition. But I guess this is ok.

In the shadow section we were supposed to use big studioflashes, surprizingly those pieces of shit failed and left us with very little options. I took one picture and it was this. I hope Marjukka has plenty of shots to give the designers.
These of course aren't all the pictures I have but just one from each category, all vertical to suit my bullshit blog. Hah. Thanks for reading.

After all this flash strobe shit lately I got a honest ambient light film photograph, I like the idea of embracing the light every once in a while, especially now after doing so much fake light stuff. Nothing more today.
