Midnight sun film festival online @ Strap 21 Jun 2007 Posted by Jussi.
I'm feeling lazy so I'll just post the same blog article as I did at strap-photos.com..
It's been couple of days now.. Fueled with homemade wine I've been scanning negatives, finishing the work, cutting down images to create a story about the film festival held in Sodankylä last week. I was fortunate enough to visit Sodankylä on three different dates during the event and photograph it. I wish I had been there more, maybe overnight too, but hey what can you do¿ Also trying to get a presspass would have been a nice idea, because I couldn't afford to see/photograph some of the movies I wanted to.

I hope you enjoy looking at the story as much as I enjoyed shooting for it. I ended up with over thirty frames, and the final story is 18 pictures. I have the whole body of work from this story in a single file, maybe I'll post it to the blog some day so you can see what I cut out. Please send feedback via e-mail if you have any thoughts about this piece of work.

Yeah it's time to party, pop a beer, hit a innocent child because Kalle just started BLOGGIN! If you don't know who Kalle is, well.. He goes by the name of Kalle Tapani Tarkiainen and is one of my favorite photographers in Finland. Yup it's done. I went there on three days to photograph the festival. I ended up with five rolls I got developed today. I guess I'll have to pop a bottle of wine tomorrow or the day after and go through the work and cut it to proper length. Let's hope its GOOD. Today's pic is of Johanna, whoohaa.

I've been taking photos of people without their heads a lot. Why is it so hard to just include the head? There is a certain level of shyness about it. Shooting right at the face is hard, people here in northern Finland look like they will shoot me if I take their picture without asking. So I guess this is a level I have to go through to build some courage. Plus including heads usually reveals something ugly and distracting in the background, which I hate. mm.

Pitäis kerätä rohkeutta että tohtis kuvata kadulla ihmisiä päin naamaa, mutta pelottavasti täällä pohjoisessa ihmiset näyttää entistä murhanhimoisemmilta kun heitä osoittaa kameralla. Puukko vyölle. Ja yleensä pään kuvaaminen paljastaa jotain rumaa taustalta, ja se taas mun mielestä pilaa monet kuvat. är.

I was at Sodankylä today, so far the best day of shooting for the story. Seems like the story has to be in color because I shot couple of real cornerstone images today and they rely a lot on colors. Anyway I'm posting a picture of my paps, again.

Päivän kuvassa meikän iskä, jolta muuten leikkasin tänään tukan siiliksi ekaa kertaa 63 vuoteen. Aika hurjaa. Otin toki kuvat ennen ja jälkeen, niistä myöhemmin lissää.

Howdy. I'm out of the office for a week. I'm trying to document the Midnight sun film festival in Sodankylä in very limited time. Just a couple of days, in and out for few hours. Typically I didn't manage to get myself to hustle a proper presspass or something in that fashion so it's going to be harder. We'll see.
Fortunately I've managed to finish some images for the blog to keep you guys entertained during the week. Today's image is another Radiosäteily picture of Radio Vostok host dude. Propably the first frame of the roll because there ain't much of it. Hah.

Suomeksi: Olen reissussa, yritän kuvata meininkiä Sodankylän filmifestivaaleilla. Kusin hommat ja jäi pressipassit hankkimatta, tai edes yrittämättä, joten homma hieman vaikeutuu. Lisäksi aika mitä vietän paikan päällä on melko rajallinen, saa nähdä saanko Strap-photos.comiin settiä aikaiseksi..
No pääasia että varasin kuvia postitettavaksi blogiin tässä viikon aikana, joten tulukaa takasin! Päivän kuva on Radio Vostokin (Radio Säteily) juontajasta. Taitaa olla rullan eka kuva, kun puolet vain tallessa. Oikein.

This is the last frame of the roll I shot a week ago or something. You can see Roifoto (the place I develop) behind the ladies. Being the shy guy that I am, I had to shoot this from the hip. I don't like shooting with a weather like this, some people think photography can't be good if the sun isn't shining. I think it can be good any time of the day, no matter the light. Otherwise it would be just boring. I'm learning to shoot with harsh light like this, I have to go all the way with the shadows with this kind of pictures to get some edge on them. Mums.

Suomeksi: Tämä taitaa olla kyseisen rullan viimoinen kuva, ainakin olen kuvassa matkalla Roifotoon kehittämään negoja. Nämä naiset tulivat suojatiellä vastaan, ilmeisesti äiti ja tyttäret. Lonkalta roiskaisin sinnepäin ja yllättäen joku kohta oli tarkkakin. En oikein välitä kuvata tuollaisella raa'alla auringonvalolla, mutta kyllä silläkin saa siistejä juttuja aikaan, pitää vaan kehittää omia tavotteita. Pitää koittaa päättää millaisiksi ottamansa kuvat haluaa lopulta saattaa, nyt tuntuu siltä että saatanan jyrkäksi on my way. Niin.

This picture is from a destroyed building, once a club room for local nazi dudes. They had decorated their shower/sauna with a huge swastika, it was actually really well made, nothing sketchy. But what the fuck?! I laughed at it but it does disturb me that some people are really into those ideals behind the sign. But they propably we're just some dudes who don't have the brainpower to truly understand beyond their prejudices and forgotten ideals of the past.

Suomeksi: Tämä kuva on paikallisen entisen natsimyönteisen kerhon suihkuhuoneesta. Pojat olivat taidokkaasti laatoittaneet hakaristin kylppäriin, se oli itseasiassa todella huolella tehty. Hyvä että koko läävä revittiin auki ja pantiin paskaksi, mutta haluttaisi tietää millaisilla ihmisillä on hakaristi kylpyhuoneessa? Missä vaiheessa jokin menee vikaan, että moisen ideologian järjettömyys jää uppoamatta kalloon?

And to your question, YES YOU CAN BUY these. I don't know the price but who the hell would pay for stuff like this?
