Artist, researcher Leena Valkeapää fell in love with a reindeerherder and moved to Kivijärvi, Enontekiö to live among the elements. She just completed a thesis on Nils Aslak Valkeapää poetry and it's connection to the nature.

Clocks are turned one hour between winter and summertime. This gets a lot of criticism every year, but there are upsides to the story. Turning the time backwards in the fall gives northern people 140 hours of extra light during their freetime.

Pretty challenging story to photograph in just two days, right? It started to get dim around 5 in the evening. I mean dim in a way that it's dim in a photograph, camera is a different beast when compared to the human eye. At six, it's almost pitch black outside. Time window is one hour and you really have to really push your camera to capture it.

Sheep are being taken from the herding island for the winter.

I also made a video from this assignment. Kind of a hazzle to shoot pics and video at the same, very limited time. Turned out pretty nice. Video available on lapinkansa.fi!

My parents visited me a couple of days ago. They had their old yashica film camera with them, with some old film and unexposed frames. They've finally turned to digital camera for the little shooting they do. I shot the last frames with the camera and had the film processed. The film was partly damaged by time and light but came out just fine. I'm pretty sure it was the last roll of film to ever be shot with that camera. great image quality when compared to pocketdigitals. And you can get these things for practically free from the fleamarkets!

Sorry for the low quality of the images, I got lazy and just used a macro lens to digitize the pictures for the blog. More to come.
